How My Early Beginnings and Past Experiences Have Prepared Me for the Next 3Yr. Propel Journey of My Ten Year Plan!

My brother & I were raised by a single Mother in the DC & Md (Chevy Chase & Bethesda areas), where we sacrificed growing up and struggled to survive, which invariably contributed to the drive that shaped my personality. Many of these early experiences apart from my business career prepared me for becoming an Entrepreneur & having an Entrepreneurial mindset with future demanding business roles through Prep School located outside of the Philly area and my time at Duke University where in each case, I was forced to step up in rigorous situations to not only survive, but thrive leading to personal growth and disciplined habits!

My Background and Experiences Herein are Divided Into the Following Categories Below, Which Have Collectively Prepared Me for Success at My Current Company Pursuit – Propel IOT:

I. Education – Prep. School & Duke University
  • Attended Prep School when 11 years old in 7th grade; worked ½ time on a large farm & ½ time spent in class each weekday.
  • The farm had 200 milking cows, pigs and grew all hay, straw & corn to feed / care for the animals. The students in the 9th grade were required to be on the daily “milk squad” for the unpasteurized & fresh whole milk that all 150 students drank, which was also sold to outside dairies as well by the tanker truck load.
  • I was Valedictorian, Student Council President, on the Vestry and Lettered in 3 Sports (Soccer, Wrestling & Track) for my 9th Grade to 12th Grade Years. In the summer after my Junior Year, I played in a soccer league that had many Penn State varsity soccer players. I was the Captain of our Soccer Team in my Senior Year, made All Conference and we won the Conference Championship with a 15-1 (won – loss) record.
  • I attended Duke University on an Air Force ROTC full scholarship and was a freshman walk on who made the soccer team.
  • During my last two years at Duke, I got married and drove a 325 mile truck route for 55-60 hours each week while attending Duke full time as a testament to my time management & creating efficient process, I even made the Dean’s List in my Senior Yr.
II. Deloitte CPA for 8 Years – Left to Join an International Client
  • Worked on various client audits ranging from manufacturing to distribution that included M&A reviews for the NY Times when buying the Spartanburg Herald, Scoville when buying Yale, Nutone and Sunbeam and Dow Chemical when buying a Greenville, SC firm.
  • At the 3 Yr. point, I ran one of the largest client engagements as a Senior in the Charlotte office that matched the size of the Duke Power client in that office. We reduced the greater than 2500 hour engagement time by 20% allowing the client audit partner to slightly reduce billings year over year in an upward increasing fee environment. It made the public client very happy and the Partner as well, because it greatly improved our profitability on that engagement.
  • As an Audit Manager, I worked on clients like Yale Security, the SC Port Authority and Dyer & Dyer Volvo in Atlanta, the Largest Volvo Dealer in North America, taught new employees at introductory classes on several occasions at Santa Cruz, CA and was commended by the Executive Office based on excellent attendee reviews.
III. Corporate Executive Roles & Experience ($50M – $450M Rev.)
  • Yale Security – A $200M Lock & door Closure Manufacturer that was bought by a UK firm, with funds raised on the London stock exchange. I was brought in as the North American Controller reporting to the President and the CFO, who managed the international locations. We grew from $100M to approximately $200M both organically & acquisitively through 3 US acquisitions that I was responsible for integrating them into our Company. I also worked with the UK Parent on financial & tax reporting of our group’s results.
  • Spatco (Southern Pump & Tank) – A $50M Industrial Pump Distributor, Gas Station Construction firm and an Environmental Clean-up / Remediation business for leaking underground tanks. Recruited as the CFO and Served on the Board as Secretary in an LBO with a Greek Investor Group. Wrote the monthly business and financial reports for the CEO and overseas investors. Helped the CEO turn the business around from losing money to profitability. I learned about making a payroll in a tight cash environment for the first 6 months on the job. We implemented an adaptation of the JD Edwards Work Order Job Cost System for the Environmental Division that JD Edwards Utilized and Marketed to Their Other Clients!
  • Dover Elevator – A $450M Elevator Installation Construction & Service Contract firm. I was brought in as the VP Finance / Treasurer & Secretary reporting to the President when the Construction & Service portion of the business was separated from the Manufacturing group into a newly formed business segment. We grew from $400M organically & acquisitively.
IV. Serial Entrepreneur – Growing Early Stage or Start-up Companies to Mid-Market Sizes Leading to Attractive Exits by a Sale to Larger Public Firms
  • Serial Entrepreneur – Growing Early Stage or Start-up Companies to Mid-Market Sizes Leading to Attractive Exits by a Sale to Larger Public Firms. I Co-founded, Led as President & CEO and/or Served as One of the Lead Executives at 3 Early Stage / Start-up Companies or Divisions That Posted Fast Growth to Become $100+M Enterprise Value Businesses Leading to Attractive Exits as Part of my Serial Entrepreneur Career to Date.
  • Worked at a Combination of Health Care Medical Records, Healthcare Asset Management, Interactive e-Learning, SaaS Technology, Satellite & Cellular Supply Chain Asset Management for the Transportation & Logistics Sector and Federal Government Contracting Work for DHS/FEMA & DLA (Defense Logistics Agency). Raised Approximately $175M of Institutional / VC Equity and $310M in LOC’s During this Period. I Worked With and Was Exposed to Some Very Reputable Individuals and Groups Like Carlisle, Sprout, Allstate Ventures, Schroder Ventures, Tudor Capital in Boston, Cross Point Venture Partners in Silicon Valley, Intel Ventures, Cisco Ventures, Lucent Ventures, Amerindo Hedge Fund, Andy Wood (former CEO of Shutterfly), Ross Perot Sr. (2 Hour Meeting in Dallas to fundraise), the CEO of WebMD, a Board Member of the Corporate Advisory Board in Washington, DC, Motorola Ventures, the Pegaso Group and the President of Motorola in Mexico, AIG Ventures, Cordova Ventures, Palladin Ventures in DC, Inverness Ventures, a Board Member who Helped Hugh McColl Build Bank of America on his Board and Worked on Funding for the Chunnel Project Connecting the UK and Europe, Who Also Served on the Comtech (Military Contractor) Board in the DC Area.
  • Worked on a Biomed Asset Management Company as my first Start-up experience where we raised initial capital through Schroeder & Allstate Ventures. I then moved onto a Patient Medical records start-up that raised $11M through Smith Barney from Tudor Ventures in Boston.
  • Having learned the “craft” of raising capital from VC firms, I co-founded BlueStar Communications, which we started in my basement and then raised an Initial $1M; half from high net worth Investors and half of which came from Ascend Communications. It was a DSL/DLEC focused on Tier 2 markets. Within the first year, we raised a $6M Series A Equity from Cross Point Venture Partners in Silicon Valley and filed a $1.2BN IPO registration within 2 years of closing the Series A Round. The Company was sold during its IPO Registration. See the cover article in the Nashville Business Magazine.
  • I opted to stay in Nashville after the sale rather than move to Denver, St. Louis or Dallas where I was being recruited by similar tech Internet & Telecom companies as Bluestar. I became the President & CEO of Be Smart Kids, an interactive pre-k learning business as we were taking the brick & mortar style of teaching to e-learning interactive on the Internet at a time ahead of larger firms like Hooked on Phonics. Clients included the children of Larry King Live and Faith Hill as well as many Tennessee Titan football players. See the “Smart Move” article in the Tennessean linked herein.
  • Helped a Biomedical Company Founder do his initial Business Plan and Financial Projections for funding by Clayton McWhorter, a Nashville Health Sector icon. This business grew to $30M in its first 3 Years.
  • I realized the e-learning Company’s Founder had major voting control & fear of dilution issues, so it stymied becoming a fast growth opportunity, which required additional growth capital. After one year, I resigned as CEO and took a CFO Consulting position with a Northern Va. Company, SkyBitz, Inc. backed by VC’s. It was a satellite asset management tracking firm serving the transportation & logistics sector. After 3 months, I joined as a full time employee and a year later was promoted to President & CEO. The team & I built the business from $1.6M revenue to over $31+M in 3 years as a fast growth tech Company that became a Deloitte # 1 fastest growth Va Company; a #2 fastest growth Company in the US and #112 on the INC 500 List. An offer by an International industry leader to buy the Company for $160M was turned down by the VC’s.
  • I next joined Numerex, a public Company, as the SVP of their LBS (Location- Based Services) group and was later promoted to also run their Security Group, which in total covered 65% of the Company’s revenue. My team’s contributions helped grow the Company’s stock price from $2.00 to over $8.00 in two years. We had clients such as AAA, Liberty Mutual, FEMA & DLA.
  • I next started Propel GPS, LLC to utilize my recent domain experiences to prove that an efficient capital / bootstrapping funding model could result in a fast growing high value SaaS Tech Company.
  • With the market place transformation underway by AI, new modularized software programming, e Sims and a Made In America focus, we are merging Propel GPS, LLC into Propel IOT, Inc. Powered by AI to signify our broader solution offerings than just GPS tracking alone. The targeted goal of our next 3 Year Pivot Plan is to deliver exceptional customer value at 40% lower priced than competitors to achieve these growth metrics:
  • $15+M Annual Revenue Profitably
  • Achieve a $100+M Enterprise Value
  • Monetize Via an Exit Through a Sale or a Major Recap.

Thus, a Propel Exit would serve as a “vehicle” to fund my next 10 Year Business & Personal Plan:

  • Start Another Tech Company as Chairman with a CEO hired from within my network.
  • Back Several of My C-Level Team Members as a Lead Investor & Chairman Once Propel is Sold When They Pursue Their Dream of Starting Their Own Businesses.
  • Spend Significant Time on My Personal Interests, Pursuits and “Bucket List”
V. Board & Advisory Boards (Burtner Group Advisory Services)
  • Served on the Nathan Associates Board in Arlington, Va Between 2008-2016 as the Audit Committee Chairman Working with Grant Thornton as Auditors and Bank of America as a Debt Lender. Nathan was a $50M International Government Contractor & an Economist Advisory Firm. See the One Page Summary Sent Out Upon My Reappointment to the Board Attached.
  • I Have Served on My Various Company Boards Throughout My Career Where I Was Employed and I Also Have Served on Various Advisory Board Roles Technology/IT; Healthcare; Government Contracting; Home & Relocation Firms as Illustrative Examples.
  • Seeking a Couple of Corporate Board Positions Where I Can Share My Experiences and Create Value to Help Fellow Entrepreneurs and Growth Companies.
VI. Teaching Evening Entrepreneurship Graduate Level Classes
  • Taught Entrepreneurship at the Duke Graduate Engineering School
  • Taught Entrepreneurship at the Massey MBA School of Business in Evenings While Working at BlueStar Communications
VII. Personal Interests & Passions Where I Balance My Work Life
  • Personal Interests & Passions Where I Balance My Work Life – Create a Lasting Legacy That Makes a Positive Difference in Many Peoples’ Lives and Have Fun While Doing So!
  • Further Entrepreneurship – Once We Achieve Propel’s Goals and Monetize Via an Exit, It Will Provide a Funding “Vehicle” for Spawning New Tech Co’s. At That Point, I Plan to Start Another Tech Co. & Support My C-Level Executives in Starting Their Own Companies.
  • Spend Family Time Especially with Our 12 Grandchildren and Involve Them in My Passion Activities, Travel and Support Them in Developing Their Passions and God Given Talents In Life
  • Resume More Active Equestrian Activities Like Fox Hunting, Which I Previously Have Done in Riding with the Middleburg Va Hunt and Old Dominion Hounds in Marshall, Va.
  • Resume More Active Private Pilot Flying and Purchase My Own Plane. See My Solo Flight Shirt Pictured That My Instructor Cut Off My Back Once I Completed That Initial Solo Flight in 1986. While at Yale Security, I Flew My Own Plane at That Time on Local Company Business and Was Added to the Company’s Insurance Policies. I Live 10 Minutes Away From a Regional Airport North of Charlotte with an Approximate 6,000 Foot Runway, so It Will Be Very Convenient at some future point for Business or Pleasure Day Type Trips.
  • Scuba – Refresh My PADI Certification. Make Trips to Southern Fla, the Caribbean and other attractive dive sites.
  • Promote Christian Values by Supporting Mission Trips and Serving the Homeless, Especially Homeless Veterans. Remain Active In Our Church Traditional Choir and Seek to Start a Praise Choir with Contemporary Christian Rock in Our Current Church Like We Had in Nashville, TN & Ashburn, VA.

My Current Company Primary Pursuit is Propel IOT, Inc. See the Propel IOT Presentation from an investor conference in the DC Area during June 2025.
